Accidents and injuries happen every day, some more serious than others. If you’ve been severely injured, it’s likely you’ll need medical rehabilitation to make a full recovery. If you were referred to a rehabilitation hospital or are thinking about checking one out, here are some of the basics you need to know before you choose the facility that’s right for you.

  • When do I need rehabilitation? If you or a loved one has suffered a spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, or orthopedic injury, or have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis or Guillain-Barre Syndrome, rehabilitation is a good choice. Many facilities offer general rehab, so research which hospitals offer the services that will help you recover the most.
  • How do I find a rehab that can help? There are certain things you need to look for when deciding what rehab hospital to choose. Some of the areas you should look at are their accreditation, staff experience, specialized care, nursing and therapy services, research programs and daily routines. Referrals are always an option. It’s good to do your research and see what facilities host your specific needs and wants. Since rehab may not be the most fun part of your day, going to a place you enjoy and feel comfortable in is crucial to getting through the process.
  • What should I wear to rehab? While you are performing your exercises, loose-fitting clothing that is easy to take on and off is essential. Sweat pants and t-shirts are ideal as well as socks and rubber-soled shoes. Depending on the weather and if you have to perform any therapy outside the building, bring seasonal clothing too.
  • Should I bring anything with me? If you are staying overnight or for an extended period of time, there are definitely things you want to bring with you. Clothes, toiletries, medical prescriptions, glasses, hearing aids, dentures and electronic devices (cell phones, iPads, etc) are all good to have. However, you should leave valuables like jewelry and watches at home. Make sure to always keep any electronic valuables you bring with you secure.
  • How should I act? Obtaining an injury can be frustrating both physically and mentally. You do not want negative thoughts to cloud your mind when you are getting ready to start a rehab program. Show up with a positive, can-do attitude. With a positive mind frame, you will be able to accomplish so much more than you may have even thought. Don’t let little setbacks bring you down. The staff at the rehab is trained to help you get through each day and end with a smile on your face.

Choosing the right rehabilitation hospital is an important decision that is crucial to how your recovery goes. With the right mindset and skilled professionals to help you along the way, you’re  sure to make a smooth recovery.
