Home Gyms for Health & Fitness

One of the greatest investments one can make in their health and fitness journey is a home gym and fitness space. Last year Google noted an exponential spike in searches for “home gyms” the week of March 15th, 2020.

Size

You don’t necessarily need a dedicated room to have a home gym. The corner of a family room or even a shared space in a home office could be all the space you need to commit to working out at home. Your desired equipment can help you decide how much real estate you need to allocate for your home gym space.

Equipment

Most home gyms consist of one or two pieces of Cardio equipment, such as a treadmill, elliptical, bike, stair climber or rower. The size of the space and your activity preference will dictate which equipment you decide to add to your home gym. Think about the type of activities you enjoy doing and then build on that concept.

Be sure to identify an area for free weights,  or if space permits a universal machine. You’ll need an open area that can be used to lift free weights, which can also double as your space for stretching, yoga and/or pilates.

Once you have a basic layout of the equipment and how it will fit into your space, start to consider the additional touches to really make the space rewarding. Things to consider are flooring, mirrors, lighting,  and entertainment.

What would a workout be without your favorite playlist to get you pumped and keep you moving? Built in ceiling speakers deliver great quality sound with the ability to stream right from your phone or tablet.

Televisions are a much sought after feature of home gyms. Think of how quickly the time can pass while you’re watching your favorite shows or movies. Modern TVs can stream any type of workout or class at the touch of a button. Casting your workout from an app on your phone or tablet to the TV can help you see the instructor more easily so you can follow along with each exercise.

The size of the space will help determine which television would work best, as well as the type of mount. Depending on the angles of the equipment, consider opting for an articulating arm that would allow you to position the television to be viewed from almost any spot in the space.

If you don’t utilize a screen for every workout, you may opt for a hidden TV installation. If your home gym has enough space above the ceiling, such as in an attic, a TV can drop down from the ceiling and tuck up and away when it’s not in use. If you don’t have space to store a hidden TV above your home gym, flip down ceiling TV mounts are a great alternative for keeping the TV out of sight.
